Congress must pass laws ensuring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) never detains or deports U.S. citizens, regardless of circumstance. Recent cases have revealed the agency mistakenly detained or removed American citizens, including young children with serious medical conditions. This violates the fundamental constitutional rights afforded to all citizens. While rare, these errors are unacceptable and inflict severe trauma on those wrongfully targeted. Clear legislation barring ICE from using funds to detain or deport any U.S. citizen would prevent such violations and provide legal recourse when mistakes occur. Protecting citizens' liberty and due process must be a non-partisan priority.
