Please sign the Social Security Fairness Act. As someone who has worked 10+ years in a job that pays into social security and currently works in the government and has a government pension, I will need the money that I paid into social security in order to survive when I reach retirement age. My family lost their home in the 2008 financial crisis. I had to pay my own way through college and take out over $200,000 in loans to pay my way through college and law school. I make way less than my professional peers because I believe in helping those who need me the most. I do important and necessary work as a public defender. But sadly, I’m not paid a wage that reflects the necessity of my position. The SSFA will help 2.5 million people like me, who either worked 10+ years in the private sector and have a public pension, or had a spouse or parent who did and relies on those benefits to survive. Mr. President, there aren’t many days left for you to forge your legacy. But by signing this bill, you have the opportunity to help public servants for decades to come. I implore you to sign this bill as soon as possible.
