I am writing to express my deep concern regarding President Trump's continued imposition of tariffs without Congressional approval, and the detrimental impact these actions are having on our economy. The Constitution grants Congress—not the President—the authority to impose taxes and tariffs, a design intended by our Founding Fathers to prevent unilateral economic decisions that could destabilize the nation.
President Trump's aggressive tariff policies are causing significant economic harm. Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has warned that these tariffs are likely to increase inflation and slow economic growth. Dimon emphasized that such measures could strain our longstanding global economic alliances, which have been instrumental to America's global standing.
Furthermore, David Kelly, Chief Global Strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, has highlighted that these tariffs could lead to stagflation—a scenario characterized by rising inflation and slowing growth—which would make the entire world poorer.
The repercussions are already evident. U.S. stock markets have experienced significant declines, with the S&P 500 dropping 3.3%, nearing bear market territory. European and Asian markets have also suffered substantial losses, reflecting the global impact of these tariff escalations.
Morgan Stanley economists have estimated that the implementation of these tariff hikes could result in a loss of approximately 70,000 U.S. jobs per month, further undercutting economic growth.
Congress cannot continue to cede this authority. This is not just a matter of policy—it is a matter of constitutional responsibility and economic survival.
I urge you to take immediate action to reclaim Congress's rightful role in overseeing tariffs and trade. Introduce or support legislation that requires Congressional approval for the imposition of tariffs. Hold public hearings to assess the economic impact of these tariffs. Demand accountability from the executive branch. We cannot afford to wait until the damage is irreversible.
Your oath is to the Constitution, not to any individual or party. I am counting on you to act with courage and conviction to protect our economy and uphold the principles upon which our nation was founded.
