I am writing as a Texas constituent to respectfully urge you to oppose any plans to construct a permanent border wall in the Big Bend region of West Texas.
Big Bend is one of the most ecologically unique and culturally significant landscapes in our state. Its rugged canyons, desert ecosystems, and the Rio Grande create a natural barrier that has long made large-scale infrastructure unnecessary in this region. Unlike other areas of the border, Big Bend’s terrain already limits access, making a permanent wall both impractical and environmentally disruptive.
The region is home to diverse wildlife, including migratory species that rely on uninterrupted habitat corridors. A border wall would fragment these habitats, disrupt migration patterns, and threaten biodiversity in one of Texas’s most important conservation areas. This directly conflicts with long-standing efforts to protect our natural heritage for future generations.
In addition to environmental concerns, Big Bend supports local economies through tourism and outdoor recreation, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. A permanent wall would alter the landscape that draws people to the region, impacting small businesses, gateway communities, and Texas’s outdoor recreation economy.
Border security is important, and I support effective, lawful efforts to ensure safety. However, in a remote and rugged region like Big Bend, modern surveillance technology, targeted personnel deployment, and coordination with law enforcement offer more effective and less damaging solutions than a permanent physical barrier.
Decisions made about Big Bend today will have lasting consequences. Once this landscape is altered, it cannot be restored. I urge you to protect this irreplaceable region by opposing border wall construction in the Big Bend area.
Thank you for your time and for your service to Texas.
