Stand Up for Something

To: Sen. Fetterman

From: A verified voter in Pittsburgh, PA

February 7, 2025

What the hell is your problem? You do one vaguely right thing for a change (re: my last letter) and then crawl up yourself again to lament that the Democrats need to win back "white men". As a white man- the only thing that the Dems do that risks losing me is not hewing to any sort of meaningful values. My problem with the Democratic party is that they don't give a full throated support of, say, trans rights (to name an issue), but instead focus-test and triangulate and measure out their political capital and decide whether or not any given issue is going to win them a position on the media-voter theorem. It's a dark calculus that seems right to the kind of wonks and advisors which drive the party, but ends up making the whole party seem like the very scolds you think they are. Because here's the thing: if you believe in something, if you really care about something, you don't play politics. You stand up for it, and you fight for it, and you have no shame, no reservation, and you do what you have to do. You can always compromise on policy, but you cannot compromise on values. You are an exemplar of the absolute lack of values the Democratic party has- a mendacious weakling who lets the wind blow them where it will. You stand for nothing but your own electoral chances. You are the epitome of what makes the Democrats weak and feckless. You are yourself, the absolute lack of feck. Grow a spine. You worry about how people react to being told their masculinity is toxic? Maybe you need to go find some masculinity of your own and actually stand for something. Because *that's* what masculinity looks like.
