Protect Trans Americans From Persecution — No One Should Have to Flee

To: Sen. Nesbitt, Gov. Whitmer, Rep. Andrews

From: A verified voter in Stevensville, MI

May 12

Trans Americans are applying for emergency Canadian citizenship certificates in as little as two weeks because they fear for their safety here at home. That is not a statistic to skim past. People are activating foreign immigration law to escape conditions in their own country, and the fact that Canada's urgent processing criteria — designed for those facing harm based on gender identity — is being widely used by Americans should alarm every elected official in this country. No one should have to research passport gender markers in another country's system because their own government has made them feel unsafe. The current political environment has made that a reality for trans people across the United States. I need you to take concrete action: oppose legislation that strips trans Americans of their rights, speak publicly against policies that treat trans people as targets, and use your platform to make clear that persecution of any community is unacceptable. This is not abstract. People are leaving. That is your constituents telling you something is badly wrong.
