I write to you today not just as a concerned citizen, but as a shepherd of my community, a community filled with hard-working men and women who rely on Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security to survive. As our elected representatives, you now stand at a moral crossroads: Will you uphold the dignity and security of your constituents, or will you bow to the reckless economic policies being pushed by Donald Trump and his allies in the House? The proposed spending bill, packed with cruel cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, is not about fiscal responsibility; it is about robbing the poor to enrich the powerful. More than 515,000 West Virginians depend on Medicaid, over 470,000 rely on Social Security, and countless seniors and disabled individuals would be devastated by cuts to Medicare. These are not just numbers, these are your neighbors, your fellow churchgoers, the very people who placed their trust in you to represent them in Washington. Jesus himself said in Matthew 25:45, “Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.” Slashing these programs while handing out tax breaks to billionaires and corporations is not only unjust, it is sinful. West Virginia has already suffered enough under misguided economic policies that prioritize the wealthy while leaving our working families behind. We do not need more empty promises of trickle-down prosperity. We need leaders who will stand firm against this assault on our most vulnerable citizens. I implore you, as a servant of God and a voice for the people, to reject this cruel spending bill and to oppose any economic policies that punish the poor while rewarding the rich. The people of West Virginia are watching, and so is the Lord.
