Bully Tactics
To: Rep. Smucker
From: A constituent in Lancaster, PA
February 3
Your lawsuit against LNP is a petty and cowardly abuse of power. Suing a local newspaper over an editorial because it embarrassed you is not “defending your reputation” — it’s an attempt to punish criticism and scare people into silence.
You weren’t defamed. You were criticized for misleading your constituents, and instead of owning that or defending your record, you chose to drag a local newsroom into court and force them to waste time and money. That’s a bully move, plain and simple.
What makes this especially transparent is that you clearly can’t defend your record on the merits. When your political identity consists of echoing Donald Trump’s talking points, scrutiny is inevitable. Resorting to legal threats instead of accountability just makes you look thin-skinned, dishonest, and afraid of public opinion.
Threatening journalists to suppress criticism of an elected official is authoritarian behavior. If you can’t handle being called out, you shouldn’t hold public office.
