2218 codifies protections from the Executive Order signed by Governor Murphy in April 2023. It protects established, best practice healthcare that is legal in New Jersey. It protects in-state providers, patients, and those who love them from being subject to the laws of states that seek to encroach on NJ’s constitutionally guaranteed rights to regulate health care and protect its residents. It is imperative that New Jersey pass this shield law now due to the multi-pronged assault on research-backed medical care by the federal government, as well as states that have banned abortion and care for transgender people. Decisions about all healthcare should rest with patients, parents, and healthcare providers, not politicians. We must stop this political overreach into the private lives of American families. Eighteen states plus Washington, D.C., have enacted shield laws to protect providers and patients. New Jersey must do the same if we are to continue retaining and recruiting top-quality healthcare providers. Thank you for voting yes on A2218 when it comes before you.
