Protect Trans Healthcare: Stand Firm Against Government Shutdown Threats

To: Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman, Rep. Evans

From: A verified voter in Philadelphia, PA

September 29

I am writing to urge you to stand firm in protecting transgender healthcare, even in the face of threats to shut down the government. The current appropriations bill contains provisions that would ban federal funding for transgender adults and youth, effectively stripping away essential medical care from an already vulnerable population. This is not just a matter of policy; it's a matter of life and death for many Americans. The proposed legislation would prohibit trans surgeries, remove Medicaid coverage from transgender individuals, and even ban Pride flags from public buildings. These measures are not just ideological attacks; they represent a direct threat to the well-being and dignity of transgender citizens. Hospitals are already ceasing to provide gender-affirming care for LGBTQ+ youth due to pressure from the current administration, leaving many without access to necessary medical treatment. It's crucial to understand that gender-affirming care is not elective – it is essential, life-saving healthcare. Banning such care would have devastating consequences for transgender individuals across the nation. The American Medical Association and other leading health organizations have consistently affirmed the necessity and efficacy of gender-affirming care. I strongly believe that protecting the rights and healthcare of all Americans, including our transgender community, is worth standing ground on – even if it means risking a government shutdown. While I understand the gravity of a potential shutdown, I also recognize that capitulating to these demands would set a dangerous precedent and cause immeasurable harm to countless lives. I implore you to continue negotiations with your colleagues, as Senator Chuck Schumer has suggested, but do not compromise on the fundamental right to healthcare. The lives and well-being of transgender Americans must not be used as a bargaining chip in budget negotiations. Please stand strong against these harmful provisions and work towards a budget that respects and protects all Americans, regardless of their gender identity.
