Protect Press Freedom in California
To: Gov. Newsom
From: A verified voter in Santa Rosa, CA
September 23
Freedom of the press is not a courtesy — it's the foundation of democratic accountability, and California should be leading the country in protecting it. I'm asking you to take concrete action to strengthen press freedom protections in this state, whether that means shielding journalists from surveillance, reinforcing shield law protections, or pushing back against efforts to intimidate or silence reporters.
Journalists in California face real threats: source exposure, legal harassment, and coordinated efforts to discredit independent reporting. A free press only functions when reporters can do their jobs without fear of retaliation. California has the platform and the power to set a national standard here. Use it.
