As a Texas resident and voter, I am writing to express concern about the increasing use of official messaging and symbolic proclamations that elevate a single model of family while implicitly diminishing others.
When state leaders or other elected officials promote narrow definitions of family—especially those that center only one structure—it sends a message about who is fully recognized as part of the community and who is not.
Texas is a diverse state. LGBTQIA+ Texans are part of every part of it: they are taxpayers, parents, workers, veterans, and business owners. They contribute to the same public systems and obligations as everyone else. They deserve equal dignity in how they are acknowledged by their government.
Official proclamations and state-level messaging should reflect that reality rather than advance exclusionary cultural narratives that divide families into “acceptable” and “unacceptable” categories.
I am asking you to make clear that the State of Texas will not endorse or amplify exclusionary definitions of family through official recognition or symbolic policy. Leadership at your level sets the tone for how inclusive—or divided—our public discourse becomes.
I expect a response to hear your stance on this matter.
