I am a U.S. citizen. I'm white, not Hispanic or Latino. I was born in Indiana. I currently live in Ohio. I had a normal Midwest childhood as part of an ordinary small-farm family. I went to college, got married, got a house. I have a job. I always pay my taxes. I always follow the law. I respect law enforcement. I'm friendly to my neighbors. I try to be as kind as possible to everyone I meet. I look out for my friends and family. I've never committed a crime. I've never been arrested. I've never been to court. I've never had a traffic violation. I've never even been pulled over while driving. Yet, I'm TERRIFIED. I have done NOTHING wrong, yet I am scared. Scared for myself. Scared for my family. Scared for my neighbors. Scared for the kids I don't even know at the school down the road. Scared for ordinary people states away who I will never even meet. Will I be interrogated at my home in the middle of the night? Do I need to start carrying my passport everywhere I go? What will happen if I don't look "white" enough to someone? How am I supposed to know if the masked men on the street pulling children into a van are violent criminals, or if they're truly "law enforcement"? What if I mishear an "order" from a supposed "ICE officer" who won't even identify himself, or what if I accidentally do something wrong during my encounter with him, which causes him to instantly kill me on sight? This is AMERICA. This is not supposed to be some fascist, dictatorial, authoritarian country from the previous century. Although you sure wouldn't know it by looking at it. What are we, as citizens, supposed to do? The government says U.S. citizens have nothing to fear, yet they've proven time and time again that our fears are completely justified. Even if nothing happens to me, I still fear for the people all around me, the people in the rest of the nation. This madness must end. ICE needs to be controlled. Protect the people you claim to represent, who elected you into office in the first place. That is your duty. Help your fellow humans. We are all on this planet together, trying to figure out life.
