An Open Letter

To: Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley

From: A verified voter in Greenwood, MO

October 5

I am writing to you today as a Missouri constituent to express my serious concerns regarding recent public statements and parliamentary conduct highlighted in a recent St. Louis Post-Dispatch editorial ("Missouri’s senators this week displayed a 'disturbing disconnect with ethical and constitutional reality'"). As our elected representative in the United States Senate, your primary duty is to represent the constitutional interests, daily realities, and integrity of all citizens across Missouri. Unfortunately, recent high-profile rhetoric—such as mischaracterizations of special counsel actions and conflated factual records—suggests a higher prioritization of partisan narrative over factual accuracy and fundamental legal ethics. Public office requires a commitment to truth, constitutional norms, and rigorous oversight. Unsubstantiated accusations and factually inaccurate claims aired on national media or during official Senate proceedings undermine public trust in our legal system and distract from the pressing economic, infrastructure, and healthcare needs facing everyday Missourians. Missourians deserve leadership that reflects grounded, honest public service rather than performative politics. I urge you to refocus your platform on verifying facts before making public assertions, respecting constitutional boundaries, and prioritizing the tangible needs of the families you were elected to serve. Thank you for your time, consideration, and service to our state. I look forward to hearing your response detailing how you intend to address these ethical and governance concerns moving forward.
