In 1994, Ukraine transferred its nuclear weapons to Russia for dismantlement and became a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. At the time, Ukraine had the third largest nuclear stockpile in the world. In the interest of global peace, Ukraine voluntarily gave up its arsenal in exchange for basic guarantees from the other three signers to those treaty. The document is known as the Budapest Memorandum. It was signed by the UK, Russia, and the United States, along with Ukraine. In exchange for the elimination of their nuclear capability, the three co-signing nations made a commitment to Ukraine. The Memorandum prohibited Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom from threatening or using military force or economic coercion against Ukraine. It offered security and protection in exchange for disarmament As we know, Russia subsequently violated the treaty, invading Ukraine and seizing territory. The world has condemned these actions. And now, the regime currently in power in the United States appears on the cusp of abandoning its own commitment to Ukraine, leaving it even more vulnerable to Russian aggression I thought I lived in a country that honored its commitments. A country that supported its allies. A country that stood for principles of honor and justice. We must not break our promises. This regime has already damaged the trust in our integrity that other nations have relied upon. Ensure that we continue to honor the promises we signed on to. Fully honor the Budapest Memorandum. To do otherwise is shameful, and it is un-American.
