Do not allow bypass of Senate confirmation of Cabinet appointees
To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz
From: A constituent in Austin, TX
November 11, 2024
We cannot allow the president to bypass the constitutionally mandated process of advice and consent from the Senate for cabinet appointments. This longstanding system of checks and balances is a cornerstone of our democracy and must be preserved. Permitting unilateral appointments during Senate recesses would undermine the Senate's critical role and set a dangerous precedent of consolidating executive power. The Senate's responsibility to thoroughly vet and confirm qualified nominees helps ensure accountability and prevents undue influence or conflicts of interest in the executive branch. Circumventing this process could lead to unqualified or compromised individuals holding key positions of power. We urge you to uphold the Senate's constitutional duty of advice and consent. Reject any proposals that would enable the president to make recess appointments and instead insist on maintaining the integrity of the confirmation process. Protecting this vital system of checks and balances is essential to safeguarding our democratic principles and institutions.
