Oppose SB 452 - SAY NO TO QUALIFIED IMMUNITY FOR ICE AGENTS IN KANSAS

To: Sen. Francisco, Gov. Kelly, Rep. Amyx

From: A verified voter in Lawrence, KS

February 19

I am writing to you as your constituent to urge you to please oppose SB 452 which would extend qualified immunity protections to ill-trained, unidentifiable ICE agents and give them the right to violate the civil liberties of Kansans without the ability to hold them accountable. This bill opens the door to ill-trained federal officers using excessive force and violating the civil rights of Kansans. Aside from giving inadequately trained ICE officers the same protections as fully trained law enforcement officials, we know from the situation in Minnesota that federal agents should not be given a broad mandate to potentially violate the civil rights of U.S. citizens and noncitizens alike. At a time when federal agents including ICE officers are under intense scrutiny for their conduct during immigration enforcement actions, Kansas shouldn’t be extending definitions of law enforcement that provide legal protections to agents who have repeatedly shown their willingness to ignore the Constitution and this nation’s laws. Please oppose SB 452 and protect Kansans from federal overreach.
