WE WON’T GO BACK

To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Pfluger, Sen. Cornyn

August 24

Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas. "As President Trump has consistently stated, he supports the rights of individuals in their respective states to determine their laws on abortion. President Trump also strongly supports ensuring women have access to the care they need to create healthy families, including widespread access to IVF, birth control, and contraception, and he always will," said Karoline Leavitt, the campaign's national press secretary.” I know your candidate is now frantically trying to portray himself as a champion of women’s rights when it comes to dominion over their own bodies. It won’t work. He is directly responsible for taking those rights away, as he has boldly reiterated time and time again. So attempts at rewriting that particular history is futile. He says states should determine these oh-so-personal rights. And a lot of states are trying to recalibrate the disaster that is happening after the demise of Roe v Wade by signature-driven efforts to put ballot measures for abortion rights on the November ballot. Kudos to those activists. It is a good positive step until we actually get our rights back unilaterally across the country. And it’s also nice to think that a state’s citizens, we the people, have that power. But let’s look at that scenario in your home state. Texas voters do not have that option. The state’s constitution requires that amendments be initiated by the legislature, which is controlled by Republican lawmakers who passed a near-total ban on abortion in 2021. Even though only 12% of Texans approve of this radical ban. So what is a woman’s option in Texas? Move out of state? Travel out of state for medical care that her state should rightly provide for her? Or just be allowed to suffer unto the point of death to get taken care of? Women in Texas are held hostage by their Republican overlords. So Mr. Trump can try and reinvent himself for the moment, but his actions caused consequences. And those consequences should affect more individuals than just the women he’s caused to suffer. He may have a short memory. You may have a short memory. But we do not. November is coming and nothing is forgotten.
