Pass a comprehensive assault weapons ban — one that prohibits the manufacture, sale, and possession of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines in our state. The data is unambiguous: when these weapons are used in public mass shootings, nearly 14 times as many people are injured and twice as many are killed compared to attacks with other firearms. Since the federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004, high-fatality mass shootings have tripled and deaths have quadrupled. That is not a coincidence.
Only 10 states have assault weapons bans, and just 2 of those actually prevent the sale or manufacture of these weapons. Virginia's legislature passed a ban through both chambers — proof that this is achievable. Our state should be next. Assault weapons are a danger to the people of this state, and it's time to act.
