Keep and fully fund the Department of Education

To: Sen. Young, Sen. Braun, Rep. Houchin

From: A constituent in New Albany, IN

December 13

The Department of Education plays a vital role in supporting educational opportunities and ensuring access to quality education for all students across the nation. Abolishing this department could disrupt critical programs that provide essential funding, resources, and oversight for public schools, especially in underserved communities. Federal programs like Title I allocate funds to assist low-income students, while IDEA ensures support for students with disabilities. The Department also upholds civil rights protections against discrimination. Removing this oversight could widen disparities and hinder equal access to education. Moreover, decentralizing control entirely to states risks creating inconsistent standards and unequal distribution of resources across districts. The federal government's limited yet strategic involvement helps maintain a baseline of equity. Instead of dissolution, I urge continued full funding and potential restructuring of the Department of Education to enhance its efficiency in addressing achievement gaps, managing student aid programs seamlessly, and driving sustainable improvements in our national education system. An informed, educated populace is crucial for societal progress.
