I write today to urge you to vote against the "Kids Online Safety Act". It is horrible legislation that will expose all Americans to greater risk of identity theft. How many high profile data breaches have there been in the last few years, where birthdays, addresses, even social security numbers have been revealed due to insufficient security? How many more will there be when scores of websites are required to gather such data in the name of safety? Furthermore, conservative forces have been quite open about their desire to use KOSA to censor health information, or anything else they decide will "harm children." Can't protect kids from guns, but we sure can make it so no one has information about birth control. If they are that willing to constrain free speech, what will stop them from ignoring the rest of the first amendment? KOSA is overeaching legislation that exposes everyone to incalculable risks. It will cripple our on-line economy, and stifle free speech in America... and that is the open promise of the bad faith actors on the other side of the aisle.
