I am writing as your constituent to urge you to vote NO on the Stop Insider Trading Act (H.R. 7008) and the Voter ID Act (H.R. 9368), whether they come to the floor separately or as a combined package. On congressional stock trading: I want lawmakers banned from trading individual stocks, full stop — not a bill that only restricts purchases while still letting members sell based on nonpublic information, keep their existing holdings, and trade freely in crypto, commodities, bonds, and sector funds. H.R. 7008 would let Congress claim credit for "reform" while leaving the exact conflicts of interest that erode public trust fully intact. Nearly half of Congress currently owns stock, and this bill changes nothing about that. If we're going to fix this, it needs to be a real ban — divestment or a true blind trust — not a bill full of exceptions that swallow the rule. On voter ID: H.R. 9368 sets one of the most restrictive voter ID standards in the country — more restrictive than nearly every state's own law — while excluding common, reliable forms of ID like student, employee, and public assistance IDs that young people and voters of color disproportionately rely on. It also fails Tribal citizens: many Tribal IDs don't have expiration dates or photos, which this bill would require, effectively disenfranchising Native voters who show up with valid Tribal identification. And its "fail-safe" for voters without qualifying ID is essentially nonexistent — it only accepts an affidavit for religious objections to being photographed, leaving out everyone who lacks ID for cost, access, or administrative reasons. With midterms months away, this bill would force dozens of states to overhaul their election procedures with zero funding or lead time to do it. Neither bill solves the problem it claims to address. I'm asking you to vote no on both, and to instead support real reforms: a genuine ban on congressional stock ownership and trading, and voting protections that expand ballot access rather than restrict it.
