Demand Accountability for Sexual Abuse in Federal Prisons

I am writing to express my outrage over the recent findings regarding sexual abuse allegations inside federal prisons. According to a new Government Accountability Office report, thousands of allegations of sexual assault and abuse have been reported against Bureau of Prisons staff over the past decade, yet the overwhelming majority of these cases were left unresolved or labeled “inconclusive.”
This is unacceptable.
People in federal custody are still human beings with constitutional rights and basic dignity. No prison employee should ever be allowed to exploit their authority to sexually abuse incarcerated individuals while the system fails to properly investigate or hold perpetrators accountable. The fact that multiple facilities have passed oversight audits while abuse was occurring on a systemic level shows a catastrophic failure of leadership and oversight within the Bureau of Prisons and the Department of Justice.
The reports describing understaffing, investigative backlogs, retaliation fears, and the dismissal of credible testimony paint a disturbing picture of an institution more focused on protecting itself than protecting victims. Congress cannot continue to look away while abuse continues behind prison walls with little accountability.
I urge you to publicly demand:
• Independent investigations into all unresolved allegations
• Stronger protections for whistleblowers and incarcerated victims
• Increased transparency and public reporting requirements
• Criminal accountability for abusive staff and supervisors who enabled misconduct
• Comprehensive reforms to the Prison Rape Elimination Act oversight process
Taxpayer-funded institutions should never become environments where abuse is ignored, minimized, or hidden behind bureaucracy. Silence and inaction only allow these crimes to continue.
Your constituents are watching how elected officials respond to this issue. I expect you to support meaningful reform and accountability immediately.
