Support Strong FY26 Funding for Science Agencies

To: Sen. Bennet, Rep. Neguse, Sen. Hickenlooper

From: A constituent in Fort Collins, CO

June 2

I’m writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to support strong funding levels for science agencies in the FY2026 federal budget. As you and your colleagues on the Senate Appropriations Committee work on appropriation bills, I want to express my deep concern regarding the significant proposed cuts to key science agencies. The White House’s FY2026 budget request outlines dramatic reductions — including a 90% cut to the USGS Ecosystems Mission Area, a 72% cut to the NSF’s Directorate for Biological Sciences, and a 50% cut to NASA’s Earth Science Division. These cuts would drastically undermine our nation’s ability to address pressing issues like biodiversity loss, climate change, natural disasters, and public health — all of which rely on robust scientific research and innovation. Science and evidence-based decision-making are foundational to effective environmental stewardship, economic competitiveness, and national security. These investments not only support critical research but also ensure that policymakers, communities, and industries have the information and tools needed to respond to complex challenges. I respectfully urge you to reject these proposed cuts and to advocate for strong, sustained funding for science agencies in the FY2026 budget. Our future depends on it. Thank you for your service and for considering this request.
