Oppose Gerrymandering in Texas

To: Rep. Gill

From: A constituent in Corinth, TX

July 31

The proposed congressional redistricting map in Texas raises serious concerns about undermining fair democratic representation. Gerrymandering districts to give one party an extreme advantage is antithetical to the principle of one person, one vote. Rather than currying favor with the President, our representatives should be focused on upholding the rights of all Texans to have their voices heard equally at the ballot box. This redistricting effort appears to be an overt attempt to dilute the voting power of communities of color and Democratic-leaning areas across the state. By packing voters into a small number of districts or cracking apart existing communities of interest, the map could lock in a Republican advantage for the next decade, even if they lack majority support statewide. Such efforts strike at the heart of our democratic system. I urge you to reject this map and any other partisan gerrymandering that rigs future elections before they are even held. All voters deserve to have their interests fairly represented, not just those of one party's base. Meaningful public input and independent line-drawing based on communities, not partisan interests, must be part of the process. Texans are counting on you to protect their rights and our democracy itself.
