Support for Mobile Driver’s Licenses and Apple Wallet Integration in Minnesota

To: Sen. Marty, Rep. Moller, Gov. Walz

From: A verified voter in Saint Paul, MN

November 20

I am writing to urge you to support the adoption of mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) in Minnesota, including the ability to add them to Apple Wallet. As technology evolves, it is essential for our state to modernize its identification systems to improve convenience, security, and efficiency for Minnesotans. Several states, including Arizona, Maryland, and Georgia, have already implemented mDLs, and Minnesota should follow suit to ensure our residents have access to the same benefits. A mobile driver’s license provides a secure and convenient alternative to a traditional physical ID. It allows individuals to present their license digitally via their smartphone, reducing the risk of loss, theft, or damage. Additionally, mDLs offer enhanced security features, including encrypted data, facial authentication, and selective information sharing. For instance, when verifying age at a business, an individual can choose to display only their age verification rather than exposing their full license details. This improves privacy protection while preventing fraud. Beyond security, integrating mDLs with Apple Wallet would bring greater accessibility and efficiency to Minnesotans. Many residents already use digital wallets for payments, boarding passes, and event tickets. By incorporating driver’s licenses, we can streamline everyday interactions, such as airport security checks and traffic stops, making processes faster and more user-friendly. Additionally, adopting mDLs aligns with Minnesota’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. Reducing reliance on plastic licenses contributes to environmental conservation while also cutting down on administrative costs associated with physical ID production and distribution. To ensure the successful implementation of this technology, Minnesota can collaborate with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) and industry leaders to adopt national security standards and best practices. States like Iowa and Colorado have demonstrated that mDLs can be safely and effectively deployed while maintaining compliance with federal regulations. I urge you to support legislation and policy efforts that will bring mobile driver’s licenses and Apple Wallet integration to Minnesota. This initiative will provide residents with a modern, secure, and convenient identification solution, ensuring our state remains at the forefront of technological advancement. Thank you for your time and consideration. I appreciate your leadership and look forward to Minnesota embracing this important step forward.
