I am writing to urge you to oppose AB 84. As a parent to two children who were unable to access public school education due to their disabilities and a lack of appropriate placements and supports, I know first hand how important it is for families to have more choices to educate their children. This bill would destroy hybrid charters in this state, which many families rely on when public schools fail disabled students. Public schools have long suffered from a lack of funding for special education, which means administrations gate keep special education services and deny IEP supports to students who are otherwise entitled to these supports. Families are left with little choice but to seek alternatives in order to support their children’s unique educational needs. In the absence of appropriate funding and training for special education in public schools, families need choices. AB 84 would devastate many students in this state who have found a way to access education that is more tailored to their needs. Please oppose this bill.
