I am writing to express my deep concern about the Trump administration's systematic dismantling of the Department of Education and its critical programs. These actions, which align with the Project 2025 agenda, are occurring without congressional authorization and threaten millions of students across the country.
The administration is proposing a federal rule to redefine certain professional degrees, which would decrease student loan caps and limit access to higher education for working families. This arbitrary reclassification would price out students pursuing careers in fields our communities desperately need. I urge you to forcefully push back against this proposal and protect students' ability to finance their education.
The administration is also transferring key departmental responsibilities to other agencies without congressional approval. International programs are moving to the State Department, K-12 education oversight to the Labor Department, and child care and special education services to Health and Human Services under RFK Jr. During the recent government shutdown threat, the team overseeing special education services was nearly eliminated entirely. Teams responsible for civil rights enforcement and federal funding for low-income students have been gutted.
These changes represent an unconstitutional dismantling of a federal agency that Congress established and funds. I urge you to conduct immediate oversight into these actions and assert Congress's constitutional authority over federal agencies and their operations.
The consequences are severe. Federal funding for public schools will be slashed. Support for students with disabilities will be eliminated. Civil rights protections in education will go unenforced. Federal student loan and workforce development programs will be abolished. These are not abstract policy debates but real harm to real students in your district.
I ask you to refuse to pass any federal funding bill that enables these drastic cuts to education programs and protections. Students, families, and educators are counting on Congress to defend the Department of Education and the vital services it provides. Please take immediate action to stop this dismantling.
