I'm writing, and alarmed by the mere suggestion that the Trump Department of Justice is trying to overturn the nearly 100-year-old federal restriction on mailing concealable firearms. This is a dangerous proposal, however you look at it:
Dangerous for public safety
Dangerous for families
Dangerous for law enforcement trying to do their real job of protecting the lublic
What I mean is that this rule has helped law enforcement track illegal weapons since 1927, and eliminating it now will make their job harder.
Sure, criminals determined to get a gun can get one, but making it easier to ship across state lines? Insanity.
The Justice Department claims this change only affects law-abiding gun owners, but gun safety groups warn it will make illegal firearms more difficult to track.
More than 20 state attorneys general oppose this proposal, including Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, who called it "a slap in the face to gun violence survivors and to law enforcement." Every state knows the cost of gun violence. One of the worst examples is the Mandalay Bay shooting in 2017 that killed 58 people.
There's no compelling reason to change a law that's worked for nearly a century. Rifles and shotguns can already be mailed, so this isn't about access for hunters or sport shooters.
This is about concealable weapons, the kind used in most gun crimes.
The USPS is accepting public comment right now, which means this can still be stopped.
Please oppose this dangerous proposal in Congress, and make it a federal crime to do this with massive penalties.
Gun laws in this country are ridiculous already, and more must be done to get them under control.
This would not be progress. Oppose. Thank you.
