Vote no on any legislation that would grant fossil fuel companies immunity from climate-related lawsuits and accountability measures. Big Oil is lobbying for a blanket liability waiver to escape consequences for fueling the climate crisis, and Congress must reject this attempt to put corporations above the law.
These companies knew decades ago that their products could cause catastrophic consequences, but they lied to the public to protect their profits. Now more than 1 in 4 people in the United States live in a state or community taking major fossil fuel companies to court for this deception. The American Petroleum Institute has made stopping these lawsuits a top legislative priority for 2026, and Republican attorneys general are pitching a liability shield modeled on the 2005 law protecting gun manufacturers.
My community is already paying for climate disasters through higher insurance costs, infrastructure damage, and emergency response. A legal shield for Big Oil would force all these costs onto taxpayers while polluters pay nothing. No industry should be above the law. Protect our right to hold corporations accountable when they cause harm.
