An Open Letter

To: Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman, Rep. Dean

From: A constituent in Telford, PA

August 24

The ICE detention of, and announced intention to deport family members of U.S. citizens serving in the U.S. military is unconscionable. A recent specific case in point is of that Luis Manuel Aviles, father of Joshua Aviles, a sailor on the USS Abraham Lincoln who has served honorably and now been at sea for nine, continuous months. Since Trump took office U.S. government has turned its back on those in need, those to whom the U.S. made commitments because they assisted our forces in overseas conflicts, and now the families of soldiers and sailors serving us all in the U.S. military. Is there no sense of honor or shred of decency left in the Trump administration? Evidence clearly indicates there is not. Even more troubling is that our elected representatives in the U.S. House and Senate enable the Trump administration, and thereby make us all ashamed of what our government has become. All members of Congress need to stand up and be counted: are you in favor of such treatment of decent persons and families who serve this country? Surely, if Congress cannot bring itself to do anything actually in the interest of the American people, surely, it can pass a law protecting those and the families of those who honorably serve our country, and, thereby perhaps begin to restore our faith in ourselves as a decent people with a government wherein there still lies a shred of hope for a return to decency.
