Americans want a strong educational system for our kids!

To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Carter

From: A constituent in Leander, TX

August 2

I’m writing as your constituent to express deep concern over the recent staffing cuts at the U.S. Department of Education, which are severely impairing the department’s ability to fulfill its mission and legal obligations. The Department plays a vital role in ensuring equal access to high-quality education for all students—especially those with disabilities, from underserved communities, or struggling under the weight of student debt. However, the recent layoffs have decimated core offices responsible for civil rights enforcement, student loan assistance, data collection, and legal compliance. With nearly half of its workforce gone, it is unclear how the Department can continue to carry out its responsibilities—implementing new education reforms, overseeing federal education funds, protecting student rights, and administering the student loan system with fairness and integrity. A strong, fully staffed Department of Education is essential to upholding our nation’s promise of equitable education. Undermining its capacity not only weakens oversight and protections but also puts millions of students and families at risk—particularly the most vulnerable among us. I urge you to take immediate action to address and reverse these harmful staffing cuts. The future of public education, civil rights enforcement, and responsible federal oversight depends on it. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
