Petition: Rescind the invitation to Vladimir Putin I am writing to condemn Secretary of State Marco Rubio's announcement on September 23 that the United States has invited Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit in Miami this December. Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He has not attended a G20 summit in person since 2019, and he is the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for the unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children. Welcoming him to American soil, at a summit hosted at a resort owned by the President, rewards aggression with prestige and gives him the photo opportunity he has been denied for years. Secretary Rubio says engagement requires talking with adversaries. Diplomacy with Russia does not require a ceremonial seat at the table of world leaders. Talks can happen through envoys and negotiators, with concrete concessions demanded in return. An invitation with nothing asked of Moscow undermines Ukraine, unsettles our European allies, and tells other authoritarian leaders that invading a neighbor carries no lasting diplomatic cost. Even some Republican senators have questioned the invitation. I urge my elected representatives to: 1 Publicly oppose the invitation and call on the administration to withdraw it. 2 Demand that any engagement with Russia be conditioned on a ceasefire and the return of abducted Ukrainian children. 3 Hold oversight hearings on the decision and its stated rationale. America should not roll out the red carpet for a leader who wages war on a sovereign democracy.
