I just read the NYT article on the EPA’s gutting of environmental regulations and am appalled that there is anyone who doesn’t want clean air and water. It’s so obviously just a move to allow large corporations to make more money than they already do. In the 1960s and 70s the US was heading down a dark path in terms of companies “self regulating” and there were serious problems with acid rain, ozone depletion, rivers catching on fire, and how many superfund sites do we currently have? A serious look every few years at what regulations are sensible or potentially overly restrictive is fine. But this blanket gutting of government programs in the aim of 1) letting corporations run wild and 2) breaking government so you can say government doesn’t work, is disgusting.
Companies will absolutely not self regulate. Even authoritarian China knows this. What is wrong with congress that you all sit back and watch this destruction?
I could say similar things about USAID, Dept of Ed, support for Ukraine, and others. But today let’s focus on the failures of the Trump administration in keeping out air and water clean.
