An Open Letter

To: Sen. Scott, Rep. Steube, Sen. Moody

From: A constituent in Sarasota, FL

May 14

I vehemently urge you to reject the destructive Budget Reconcilliation bill. This proposal is a craven effort to fund tax cuts for the wealthy by gutting vital programs that support working families and protect our environment.   The bill's $800 billion in cuts to Medicaid will strip healthcare from millions of low-income Americans, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities. This callous attack on our social safety net is morally reprehensible.   The provision to increase funding for ICE by over $1 billion will only escalate the human rights abuses of mass deportations that tear families apart. We must stop treating undocumented immigrants as criminals.   Also alarming is the green light given to sell off public lands for fossil fuel exploitation. At a time when we face an existential climate crisis, this reckless giveaway to oil and gas corporations is unconscionable. Our public lands are a shared resource that must be preserved for future generations.   Beyond these egregious examples, the bill's draconian cuts to student aid, attack on consumer protections, undermining of judicial authority, and corporate handouts, represent a full-scale assault on the public good! Budgets are a statement of priorities and values - this one prioritizes greed over people and country.   I implore you to summarily reject this destructive bill. Stand up for the people of this nation, not the narrow interests of the wealthy few. Defend our environment, healthcare, and democracy by voting NO on this shameful proposal. The world is watching!
