Oppose Executive Order Preempting State Authority on AI

To: Gov. Mills, Sen. Carney, Rep. Beck

From: A constituent in South Portland, ME

December 13

I am writing to urge you to oppose and actively challenge the recent Executive Order asserting federal preemption over state regulation of artificial intelligence. States have long held authority to protect residents through consumer protection, labor, civil rights, privacy, and public safety laws. An Executive Order cannot lawfully strip states of these powers absent clear congressional authorization. I ask that you publicly oppose this order and take all appropriate steps—legal, legislative, and administrative—to defend state authority and prevent unlawful executive overreach. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
