Rein in tariffs through Congressional oversight over trade policies

To: Sen. McCormick, Rep. Perry, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in New Cumberland, PA

April 7

President Trump's sweeping tariffs on imports pose significant risks to the U.S. economy, consumers, and American businesses. While the intent may be to strengthen domestic industry and renegotiate trade deals, the imposition of tariffs is likely to trigger retaliatory actions from trading partners, raising costs for businesses and consumers across many sectors. This could spark a trade war that ultimately undermines economic growth and job creation. I urge you to consider taking action to check the President's authority on tariffs. The Constitution grants Congress the power to regulate foreign commerce and set tariff policy. Legislation has been proposed that would require the President to justify new tariffs and obtain Congressional approval within 60 days. Such a measure would restore Congress' Constitutional role and provide oversight of tariff actions that can have widespread economic impacts. Tariffs are a blunt instrument that often miss their intended target while harming American consumers and businesses caught in the crossfire. I encourage you to carefully weigh the potential consequences of the President's tariff policies and explore options to rein in this unilateral executive overreach on trade issues. Protecting Congress' lawmaking powers on tariffs can prevent severe economic disruption.
