The Social Security Administration is in crisis, and immediate action is required to prevent disaster. Former Commissioner Martin O’Malley has warned that the agency is on the brink of collapse due to deliberate cuts, staffing reductions, and failing IT systems. If nothing is done, benefits for millions of Americans could be disrupted within 30 to 90 days.
The facts are clear:
• The SSA is closing 45 offices as leases expire.
• Employee buyouts are underway, reducing staff from 57,000 to 50,000.
• IT failures and system outages are increasing, further destabilizing operations.
• More than 72.5 million Americans depend on Social Security, and they are now being told to “start saving” as the system crumbles around them.
This is a direct attack on working Americans who have contributed to Social Security their entire lives. The agency is being deliberately weakened, and without action, millions could face interrupted payments, longer processing times, and increased hardship.
Congress must step in to halt the buyouts, prevent office closures, and investigate the actions of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) before irreparable damage is done. Social Security is not a luxury—it is a lifeline.
Americans will not tolerate inaction on this issue. I expect to see real steps taken to prevent this crisis from escalating any further.
