I am a constituent. I am writing to alert you to the severe impact that the new U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) entry requirements detailed in Indefinite Suspension of the De Minimis Exemption for Mail Shipments and New Postal Informal Entry Process will have on my ability to get my needed personal-use prescription medications imported from licensed Canadian pharmacies. Under these surprise new requirements, beginning October 22, medications sent by pharmacies outside the United States will be blocked from entry. This will prohibit prescription shipments of daily medications from these licensed pharmacies - even when the medications are safe, legal in the country of origin, and prescribed by a licensed physician. The restrictions are expected to apply to pharmaceutical parcels sent by pharmacies anywhere outside the U.S. - if the medication is already sold in the U.S. at a much higher price or if the seller happens to be promoting to Americans. Like many Americans, I rely on purchasing prescription medications from Canada because the same medicines are often dramatically more expensive in the U.S. Without access to these lower-cost daily medications, I and many others will struggle to afford the medicine our doctors prescribe to stay healthy. If this rule takes effect as written or in its current form, I will be forced to make tough decisions about my healthcare. Purchasing my required medication from these licensed pharmacies is my only viable option because it is unreasonably expensive here in the U.S. I respectfully ask you to use your influence with CBP and the Administration to exempt personal-use prescription medications from this proposed rule. Otherwise, starting October 22, a public health crisis will emerge in which potentially millions of patients like me lose the only genuine option we've had to maintain the necessary medication treatments prescribed by our doctors. This is a very important issue to me which I will consider when I cast my ballot in the next election cycle.
