I’m writing to urge you to exercise strong congressional oversight regarding President Donald Trump’s statements and actions related to Venezuela and Greenland, and more broadly to reaffirm Congress’s role in checking reckless or destabilizing foreign policy initiatives.
I am concerned that rhetoric and proposals involving Venezuela — including talk of intervention or coercive regime change — risk dragging the United States into yet another unnecessary and costly conflict, with serious humanitarian and geopolitical consequences. Similarly, the repeated suggestions about acquiring Greenland, while sometimes framed as jokes or negotiation tactics, undermine our credibility with allies and reflect a troubling disregard for international norms and diplomacy.
Regardless of who holds the presidency, Congress has a constitutional responsibility to act as a check on executive overreach, especially in matters of war, sanctions, and foreign entanglements. I am asking you to:
• Publicly reaffirm that any military action against Venezuela must require explicit congressional authorization.
• Push for transparency and hearings regarding any plans, negotiations, or pressure campaigns related to Venezuela.
• Stand up for a serious, alliance-based foreign policy and reject irresponsible or unserious proposals that damage U.S. credibility, such as the idea of acquiring Greenland.
I want a foreign policy that is steady, lawful, and focused on the real needs of the American people — not one driven by impulse, bravado, or political theater.
Thank you for your time and for representing our district. I would appreciate knowing your position on these issues.
