As one of your constituents, I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the “Protecting Women’s Private Spaces Act” proposed by the Congressional GOP and to urge you to oppose this harmful legislation. I also ask you to speak out in support of Representative Sarah McBride, who has been unfairly targeted in an escalating campaign of harassment against transgender and nonbinary individuals.
This legislation would restrict bathroom use in federal buildings based solely on biological sex, forcing transgender individuals to use facilities that do not align with their gender identity or presentation. Research and lived experiences have shown that such policies do not make anyone safer; in fact, they significantly increase the risk of harassment and violence for transgender individuals.
Moreover, as a cisgender woman, I can attest that these measures do not protect women like me. Instead, they create an environment where women—cisgender and transgender alike—are subjected to intrusive scrutiny, stereotyping, and harassment. Many of us have either experienced or know someone who has been harassed in public restrooms because they didn’t conform to others’ expectations of appearance or gender presentation. This is not safety; this is discrimination.
Proponents of this legislation claim to champion the safety of women and girls, but their actions suggest otherwise. We should not allow the protection of cisgender women to be weaponized as a justification for bigotry, nor should we stand by as vulnerable populations are vilified for political gain.
I urge you to publicly oppose this legislation and affirm your support for Rep. McBride as she works to represent her constituents in Delaware. Your voice is needed to ensure that Congress protects the dignity, safety, and rights of all people—transgender and cisgender alike.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to seeing you take a stand against this harmful legislation.
