Restore Minnesota's Medicaid Funding and Protect Patient Care

To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Self

March 18

The Trump administration's decision to freeze $259.5 million in Minnesota Medicaid reimbursements and threaten to withhold $2 billion in future funding puts vulnerable patients at risk. I need you to oppose these unprecedented actions and push for immediate restoration of Minnesota's federal Medicaid funds. Addressing fraud matters, but this approach punishes patients instead of perpetrators. Kids like 14-year-old Greta Lindbo, who has cerebral palsy, depend on Medicaid for school paraprofessionals, home care assistants, and medical equipment that private insurance won't cover. The federal government's "cut first" strategy threatens to disrupt care for thousands of Minnesotans who have done nothing wrong. Minnesota has already shut down fraudulent programs and filed detailed responses to federal concerns. Past administrations worked cooperatively with states to address fraud without jeopardizing patient access. This simultaneous use of deferrals and withholding at massive scale breaks from that precedent and creates a financial crisis that will force delayed provider payments, enrollment freezes, and service cuts. The fact that similar letters went to California, New York, and Maine suggests this could become a dangerous new framework for federal oversight. Healthcare access cannot become a political weapon. Work with your colleagues to ensure fraud prevention happens through collaboration, not by holding patient care hostage.
