Vote no on the $1 billion in taxpayer funding for security upgrades to President Trump's White House ballroom project. This money has no place in legislation meant to fund immigration enforcement agencies.
The White House already said private money would pay for construction while public funds covered security measures. Now Republicans want to hand over $1 billion in public money—more than twice the $400 million construction cost—for a vanity project that includes bomb shelters and military installations underneath a ballroom. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is suing to stop this project entirely.
Americans are dealing with the real consequences of failed policies, not worrying about whether the president has bulletproof glass at his dinner parties. The attempted assassination at the Washington Hilton was serious, but the solution is better Secret Service protection at existing venues, not a billion-dollar ballroom. If Trump wants his heavily fortified event space, he can pay for it himself.
Block this funding. Not one taxpayer dollar should go toward this project.
