Oppose cuts to NOAA

To: Sen. Johnson, Rep. Tiffany, Sen. Baldwin

From: A constituent in River Falls, WI

February 28

I am writing to express my strong opposition to any efforts to further reduce the workforce of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA plays a critical role in monitoring severe weather, predicting hurricanes, protecting fisheries, and ensuring the safety of our coastlines. Cutting staff from this vital agency would weaken our ability to respond to climate-related disasters, disrupt research on oceanic and atmospheric changes, and endanger industries that depend on accurate weather forecasting, such as agriculture, shipping, and aviation. In recent years, we have seen an increase in extreme weather events, from hurricanes to wildfires, which have caused significant damage to communities across the country. Reducing NOAA’s workforce would hinder the agency’s ability to provide timely warnings, putting more lives and livelihoods at risk. Additionally, NOAA’s work supports countless jobs in coastal economies, scientific research, and emergency preparedness—cutting staff could have ripple effects far beyond the agency itself. I urge you to strongly oppose any attempts to weaken NOAA through staffing reductions and to advocate for full funding of this essential agency. Protecting NOAA means protecting our environment, economy, and national security. I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to your response on how you plan to ensure NOAA remains fully staffed and operational.
