I’m writing as a constituent to urge you to oppose the SAVE Act. I care deeply about secure elections, but this bill does not strengthen election integrity—instead, it creates unnecessary barriers for eligible Americans who want to vote.
Every state already requires voters to affirm or verify their citizenship when registering. It is also already illegal for noncitizens to register or vote in federal or state elections. Adding a new documentation requirement does not solve a real problem; it only makes the registration process harder for many lawful voters.
The people most affected would be those who already face challenges accessing documents: military families who move frequently, people recovering from natural disasters who may have lost important papers, and Americans who have changed their names and need updated records. Many citizens—especially citizens of color—are statistically less likely to have passports or other forms of documentation readily available. These hurdles do not make our elections safer; they simply make participation more difficult.
Voting should be secure, but it should also be accessible. The SAVE Act moves us in the wrong direction. I respectfully ask you to reject it.
Thank you for your time and attention.
