Pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and End Gerrymandering

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. McClintock

From: A constituent in El Dorado Hills, CA

July 6

Support and pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and pass laws to make gerrymandering a thing of the past. The John Lewis Act would create a Voting Rights Act for the 21st century — restoring preclearance in places that are discriminating on the basis of race and creating preclearance for certain practices that are frequently discriminatory. That's exactly what's needed to undo the damage the Supreme Court has done through decisions made in the last several years, like Louisiana v. Callais. It would also bolster Section 2 of the law, which allows lawsuits to ensure voters of color have the opportunity for fair representation. Legislatures across the South are already drawing maps designed to dilute the voting power of Black communities and communities of color. Congress must make it easier for citizens to vote and be fairly represented. Not harder. Support the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and pass meaningful anti-gerrymandering legislation now.
