ABSOLUTELY NO TO CASEY MEANS AS THE NEXT U.S. SURGEON GENERAL

To: Sen. Mullin, Sen. Lankford, Rep. Cole

From: A constituent in Norman, OK

February 26

I am writing as a constituent to express my strong opposition to the confirmation of Dr. Casey Means as the next U.S. Surgeon General. While I respect the constitutional role of the Senate in providing advice and consent for presidential nominations, I believe this position demands a nominee with a firm grounding in evidence-based medicine, substantial clinical experience, and a long record of public health leadership. After reviewing credible reporting and testimony surrounding Dr. Means’s confirmation hearing, I am deeply concerned that she does not meet these standards. 1. Incomplete and unconventional medical training: Although Dr. Means graduated from medical school, she did not complete her surgical residency and does not currently hold an active medical license. The role of Surgeon General has historically been filled by highly trained, board-certified clinicians with extensive public health experience — not social media influencers. 2. Career centered on being a wellness influencer and entrepreneur: Dr. Means has built her public profile primarily as a wellness influencer, entrepreneur, and co-founder of health-tech businesses rather than as a practicing physician or public health official. She has promoted supplements, wellness products, and private health services — at times without always disclosing financial ties clearly, raising conflict-of-interest concerns. 3. Public statements and views counter to mainstream scientific consensus: During her Senate hearing and in her public work, Dr. Means has emphasized theories about chronic disease that stray from broadly accepted scientific evidence, such as attributing a wide range of illnesses primarily to diet, lifestyle, and cellular energy dysfunction rather than established biomedical causes. Critics have described some of this rhetoric as simplistic or lacking robust scientific support. She has also evaded direct support for routine vaccination guidance during testimony — a critical responsibility of the Surgeon General in protecting public health — raising alarm among health professionals. The Surgeon General serves as the chief communicator of public health and trusted medical advice for all Americans. This role should be filled by someone with a proven track record of relying on rigorous scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and leadership in public health emergencies and policy. I do not believe Dr. Means’s background aligns with these essential responsibilities. For these reasons, I urge you to oppose her confirmation and support the appointment of a nominee whose qualifications reflect the gravity of this role and whose expertise will strengthen, not undermine, public trust in health guidance. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
