A 37-year-old woman is dead after a federal immigration enforcement agent shot her on East 34th Street and Portland Avenue in Minneapolis at approximately 9:30 a.m. She was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center with life-threatening gunshot wounds and later died. This tragedy represents the deadly consequence of allowing federal agents to operate in our communities without meaningful oversight or accountability.
Mayor Jacob Frey stated that Minneapolis has "dreaded this moment since the early stages of this ICE presence" and characterized the incident as "a federal agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying." He demanded that ICE leave Minneapolis, noting that federal agents are creating chaos rather than safety. The Mayor emphasized that "People are being hurt, families are being ripped apart, long-term Minneapolis residents who have contributed greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy are being terrorized and now, someone is dead."
Federal immigration enforcement is operating in American cities without the checks and balances that protect citizens in a democracy. These agents answer to no local authority, follow no transparent protocols, and face no immediate consequences when their actions result in death or injury. This creates a dangerous power imbalance that threatens every resident, regardless of immigration status.
I am asking what concrete action you will take today to oppose this threat to our democratic principles. Will you introduce or co-sponsor legislation to restrict federal immigration enforcement operations in our communities? Will you demand congressional hearings into this fatal shooting and the broader pattern of federal overreach? Will you use your platform to call for the immediate withdrawal of these agents from Minneapolis and other cities?
A woman is dead. Families are being terrorized. Our communities are less safe because of federal presence, not more. I need to know what you are doing right now to protect your constituents from unchecked federal power.
