Defend Our Democracy—Stand Up to Trump’s Attacks on the Constitution and Democracy I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent from Des Moines, Iowa because I see our democracy, our Constitution, and the safety of every American—including Iowans—under direct threat from Donald Trump’s actions and rhetoric. The continued erosion of democratic norms, the incitement of violence, and his blatant disregard for the rule of law are not just political issues; they are existential threats to our nation. Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he has no respect for the Constitution, from attempting to overturn a free and fair election to openly calling for the termination of parts of our founding document. His rhetoric incites political violence, his promises of revenge and mass detainment mirror authoritarian regimes, and his blatant disregard for democratic institutions puts all Americans at risk. We have already seen the consequences of enabling his recklessness: the January 6th attack, escalating threats against judges and public officials, and the growing radicalization of individuals willing to take violent action based on his words. His recent promises of “retribution” and the use of government power to target political opponents signal an even darker path ahead if he is not held accountable. This is not about partisanship—it is about the survival of American democracy and the safety of every citizen. I urge you to take a firm stand against Trump’s attacks on our Constitution. Publicly denounce his actions, work to ensure he is held accountable for his crimes, and commit to upholding the rule of law, no matter the political consequences. If you are unwilling to do what is right for the people of this country—if you will not stand up for democracy, the Constitution, and the safety of Americans—then you should vacate your seat and make room for someone who has the courage to do so. The people of Iowa and this nation deserve leaders who will fight for democracy, not those who enable its destruction through silence or complicity.
