Today I take pen in hand to write and urge your support for the Redistricting Reform Act, House and Senate versions. This crucial legislation addresses the pressing issue of partisan gerrymandering, which poses a significant threat to our democratic process. It addresses the Republican scheme not to win on issues — their policies are extremely unpopular! So instead they are attempting to rig the outcome of the election and silencing Brown and Black voices. The Redistricting Reform Act offers a comprehensive solution to combat the manipulation of congressional districts for political gain. By prohibiting mid-decade redistricting and mandating the establishment of nonpartisan, independent redistricting commissions (IRCs) in ALL STATES, this bill would safeguard the integrity of our electoral system. Recent attempts to redraw district lines in Texas and California ahead of the 2026 midterm elections highlight the urgent need for reform. The proposed 15-member IRCs, with equal representation from majority party, minority party, and unaffiliated or minor party members, would ensure a balanced and fair approach to redistricting. This legislation sets clear criteria for redistricting plans, including compliance with the Constitution and Voting Rights Act, protection of minority representation, and respect for communities of interest. By prohibiting undue partisan favoritism and requiring public hearings, the act promotes transparency and accountability in the redistricting process.
